The International Driving Permit (IDP) is the only genuine, legal document officially sanctioned by the United Nations through international treaties (primarily the 1949 Geneva and 1968 Vienna Conventions on Road Traffic).

What it is: The IDP is essentially a multi-language translation of your valid domestic driver’s license, usually printed in a small, passport-sized booklet. Issuing Authority: The IDP must be issued by an authorized entity in the same country that issued your original driver’s license. In the United States, this is typically the American Automobile Association (AAA) or the American International Automobile Club (AIT/FIA).
